This quote means you should always prefer to lose with honor than win by cheating. If you cheat and you win you will feel awful and no pride at all is better to lose with honor and knowing you did not cheat. For example of the horse rider who shocked the horse so it ca run faster. He thought he wouldn't get caught but a photography catcher him in the act but he was caught and his reputation was over.
